How to Measure Yourself for a Custom Tailored Suit

Contrary to popular belief, measuring yourself for a custom made suit is not a difficult process. This process requires a little practice, a partner and a measuring tape.  At most, this process should not take more than 5 minutes. The best part about measuring yourself for a custom made suit is you will always have your measurements on hand to order custom suits whenever you feel the need and it will help guide you when making other clothing purchases!

Tips

  • Maintain your normal posture
  • Avoid flexing your muscles and holding in your stomach
  • Remove all items from your pockets and your belt
  • Remove your shoes
  • Wear a pair of dress pants

Measure around the lower section of the neck, below the adam's apple.

Place the tape measure under the armpits and measure around the fullest part of your chest. This region is usually across the nipple line of the chest.

Measure across the front of the chest from the right armpit to the left armpit.

Measure from the end of the right shoulder to end of the left shoulder, following the natural curvature of the back. The end of the shoulder is where the horizontal plane of the shoulder intersects the vertical plane of the arm.

Ensure your arm is flat and straight against your body. Measure from the end of the shoulder to the elbow and them from the elbow to base of your hand (1 inch below the wrist bone .

Measure from the base of your neck straight down to a point level with your first thumb knuckle. The base of the neck is where your shoulder intersects with your neck. A general rule is the jacket length should be long enough to cover your buttock.

Measure around your waist where you would normally wear your dress pants.  This will likely be higher on your abdomen than jeans. Don't be alarmed if the measurements seems larger than expected. Retail store pants are labeled as being smaller than what they really are.

Measure around the widest part of your hips.

Measure from the top of the of the pant's waistband to the back top of the pant's waistband. Ensure the waistband is where you would normally wear dress pants.

With your shoes removed, measure from the top of your pant's waistband to the floor. Ensure your waistband is where you would normally wear your dress pants.

Measure around the fullest region of your knee.
